Our New Core Faculty Model & Other Changes
Welcome to the second edition of our newsletter. As I write this we are busily interviewing many talented medical students from all over the country for our next residency class. Once again we have received hundreds of applications from highly qualified students who bring leadership, a commitment to the underserved and a variety of lived experiences to their career in family medicine. In March we will receive the results of the Match and share them with you in the spring newsletter.
Meanwhile, we have been working diligently to strengthen and innovate in our program to prepare the physicians of the future. In the last six months we have restructured our residency leadership to a consolidated "core faculty" model with dedicated time each week for residency administration and teaching, in addition to the larger Residency Leadership Group (RLG) that continues to meet regularly. We welcome Angela Echiverri, MD; Ne Ferguson, MD; Sarah McNeil, MD; Dan Moring-Parris, MD; Tai Roe, MD; and Leah Romito, MD into the Core Faculty roles as well as Brian Johnson, MD continuing as Associate Residency Director and Patty Hennigan, PhD, leading Behavioral Medicine. Please see the website for more info about each of them and many of our faculty. I am very excited about these many accomplishments and the new energy in the Residency leadership.
On a personal note, I wanted to let you all know that I will be transitioning out of the program director role here at Contra Costa in June 2019. I am proud of what we accomplished in my six years as Residency director and looking forward to the next chapter in my career at CCRMC & Health Centers. We will undertake a search process and announce my successor in our next edition of the newsletter.
Have a happy and healthy new year!

What is Your Favorite Intern Memory?
By Alex Harsha, MD
Intern year is a blur so it's a tough question. My favorite intern memory is of our retreat at Point Reyes. I rushed home after work to finish prepping lasagnas to share and so naturally we were running late. We then had to drive through a terrible gloomy rainstorm on these winding roads with signs warning of flash floods and every minute was more stressful than the next. However once we arrived and the rest of the interns started trickling in, we gathered in the kitchen of the hostel and shared some beers and laughs while the stress of the day and the year started to melt away. We finished the night tucked away in our cabin playing silly games and laughing at each other's stories, and intern year seemed farther and farther away. It was a great time to re-connect and reflect, and provided sustenance for the rest of the year.
Congratulations!
Brian Johnson, MD our Associate Residency Director was honored at the 2018 UCSF Rodnick Colloquium where he was presented with the Rodnick- UCSF Department FM Network Award- for network support and collaboration. Please join us in congratulating him!
Intern Class of 2021
We were excited to welcome our intern class over the summer. They also sang the following tune at the annual medical staff dinner, we hope you enjoy!
Diversity Leadership Council
Our new residency diversity council is dedicated to improving and sustaining diversity in our Residency program. To that end, it advocates bolstering underrepresented-in-medicine (URM) students via pipeline programs and active recruitment of these students into the Contra Costa Family Medicine Residency Program.
The diversity council recognizes that it is important to patient care, health outcomes and resident professional development to have physicians that reflect and understand the diverse backgrounds and experiences of our patient population. It advocates for an increased presence within our communities.
Check Out Our Clinics
The future of health and healthcare lies in our communities and we look forward to strengthening our ambulatory training and community connections with the dedicated faculty leading us at the clinic sites. Please see the facilities page for our newest video on our clinic sites.
