Physical Activity

Live Longer and Be Stronger—Have Fun and Be Active!

Contra Costa Health Services is committed to collaborating with health professionals, schools, child care centers, residents, cities and organizations to encourage safe and active living in the following ways:

  1. Collaborate with community leaders and city planners to design a "built environment" that promotes safe and accessible streets, sidewalks, bike paths, parks and public transportation.
  2. Encourage physical activity programs and policies in communities, schools, after-school programs, early childcare centers and preschools.
  3. Promote physical activity for everyone through educational workshops, and resources and referrals to safe places and spaces to play.

People of all ages can benefit mentally and physically by being physically active.
A lifestyle that includes regular exercise can:

  • Make it easier to maintain a healthy weight and blood pressure
  • Lower the risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and some cancers
  • Build healthy muscles, bones, and joints
  • Improve learning and productivity at school and work
  • Boost energy, mood, reduce stress and promote brain health.

Unfortunately, less than half of adults and children in USA meet the physical activity guidelines. The 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, issued by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, recommend that:
